Two-digit by two-digit multiplication is a major skill for 4th and 5th grade students. Learners use strategies like the area model (box method) to understand place value, then move to the standard algorithm for faster computation. Double digit multiplication practice builds the fluency students need before decimals and fractions.

Our free 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication worksheets include standard algorithm drills, area model templates, and word problems. Every set comes with a printable answer key. Generate a custom worksheet below or print a ready-made sample for classwork, homework, or math centers.

How to Multiply 2-Digit by 2-Digit

Use the standard algorithm to multiply 23 × 45. Follow each step and add the partial products at the end.

  1. Multiply by the ones digit: 23 × 5 = 115. Write 115 in the first partial product row.
  2. Multiply by the tens digit: 23 × 4 = 92. Because you multiplied by 40, write 920 (shift one place left).
  3. Add the partial products: 115 + 920 = 1,035.
  4. Check your answer: 23 × 45 = 1,035.

Example: 23 × 45

23
× 45
115
920
1,035
123 × 5 = 115 (ones digit)
223 × 40 = 920 (tens digit, shifted)
+115 + 920 = 1,035

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting to shift the tens partial product: When you multiply by the tens digit, place the result one column to the left (add a zero in the ones place).
  • Misaligning place values: Line up partial products by place value before adding. A digit in the tens column must stay in the tens column.
  • Forgetting to carry: When a single-digit product is 10 or more, carry the extra ten to the next column.
  • Adding instead of multiplying: Students sometimes add the two factors. Remind them that the × symbol means multiply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most students learn 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication in 4th grade and practice through 5th grade. Schools often introduce the area model first, then move to the standard algorithm once students understand place value in multiplication.
