How to Simplify Fractions

Simplify 6/8 to lowest terms using the greatest common factor (GCF).

  1. Find the GCF: The largest number that divides both 6 and 8 is 2.
  2. Divide the numerator: 6 ÷ 2 = 3.
  3. Divide the denominator: 8 ÷ 2 = 4.
  4. Write the answer: 6/8 = 3/4. Check that 3 and 4 share no common factors other than 1.

Alternative method: Divide by any common factor repeatedly until you cannot simplify further. For 24/36, divide by 2 to get 12/18, then by 2 again to get 6/9, then by 3 to get 2/3.
